The text of a letter sent to Nick Harvey on 15 November 2011
Re: Trident and BASIC
I'm well aware that, as Quakers in Barnstaple, we have written to you before on the subject of Trident. The reason for writing again is to reinforce the recent submission by several non-conformist churches and the Society of Friends (Quakers) to the British American Security Information Council (BASIC) for the independent cross-party commission to examine UK nuclear weapons policy (July 2011), as Michael Bartlett (Parliamentary Liaison Secretary for Quakers in Britain) has requested of local meetings.
As part of the section on perspectives on international law, the report suggests that 'if the use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible then the threat of their use (i.e. a conditional willingness to use them) is also inadmissible. ..'. There are many other cogent arguments that may now be dulled by familiarity but we feel bound to re-emphasise the enormity of a decision to replace Trident.
We appreciate your earlier understanding response to our letter on this subject and we certainly don't expect a reply on this occasion.
With best wishes
Mary Cameron (on behalf of Barnstaple Quakers)
